TOKYO: Parking violations by diplomats in Tokyo continue to be dominated by Russia, according to information from the National Police Agency (NPA) uncovered by news channel FNN.

Russia was responsible for around 60 percent of the total number of vehicles with foreign diplomatic license plates that were subject to 15,000-yen fines for parking outside designated areas.

While China had the second highest number of cases, it did manage to reduce the number from 638 cases to 246. In third place was Kazakhstan, followed by Egypt, Iran, and Ukraine.

Japan hopes that by disclosing country names, it will deter those abusing diplomatic privileges.

Russia has continued to be the worst country in terms of the number of cars with diplomatic license plates that ignored parking fines in the last five years. There were 2,338 cases in 2022.

Following a series of FNN reports, the number of parking violations in each country has improved significantly over the past few years, but Russia stands out for its high number of past violation fines.

The United Arab Emirates was ranked in the top 20 countries, but after making the necessary payments, the number of violations dropped to zero for the first time, NPA reported.
