Nothing complements a look quite like a fluffy, voluminous lash achieved with a coat (or two!) of one of the best mascaras. But alas, not all wands and formulations are created equal, so a bit of discernment should be used when selecting the best mascara for lengthening, volumizing, or otherwise swiping your lashes into their most fluttering condition.

“I love mascara because it makes the eyes pop and enhances your eye shape,” says celebrity makeup artist Anthony Nguyen, whose clientele includes Adele, Sydney Sweeney, and Camila Cabello. “It’s an essential item for an everyday look, whether it’s worn alone for a natural or dramatic look!” A swipe of mascara is also a foolproof strategy if you just want to look a little bit more awake for that morning meeting after a late-night binge-watching your favorite Netflix show. As far as application goes, Nguyen suggests swiping on mascara “at the base, and less at the tips to create a more dimensional look.” Another thing to always remember, according to Nguyen: “Comb the lashes outward at the end to enhance the shape of the eye.”

What to Look for in a Mascara
“Whenever I’m shopping for a mascara I look for a wand that has different depths, for example if the brush has a cone shape or has ridges — or even if it has a comb, which is my favorite,” says makeup artist Vincent Oquendo, whose clients include Jenna Ortega and Lily Collins. “This helps define and separate lashes while building them up.”
Tobi Henney, makeup artist for models like Poppy Delevigne and Barbara Palvin, adds that there are “key factors” to consider while shopping for mascara. “For example, do you want a mascara that’s easy to remove, gives volume, length, or creates curl?” Consider the climate you’ll be wearing the mascara in, too, Henney suggests, as this could affect your decision to seek out a waterproof formulation or not.
