6 First Alert Forecast – Storms move east as cooler air moves in Tuesday night

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – 10:05 p.m. Update — Storms have mainly moved into W Iowa with no severe thunderstorm warnings issued along the front over the last hour. With intensity winding down and storms clearing E the Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been dropped for most of the viewing area.

8:45 p.m. Update — Storms are moving into the metro with some stronger wind gusts. So far, there have been no reports of any severe wind gusts, though these storms may still catch your attention with frequent lightning and heavy rain. Wind gusts of 30 to 50mph may still be possible as storms roll across the Omaha metro through 10pm. Additional rainfall of 1/2 to 1 inch is possible with the heavier downpours. Storms should continue to weaken as they push east, and most of the activity should be pushing out of the area by Midnight.

8:15 p.m. Update — A Severe Thunderstorm Warning is in effect until 9pm for a large portion of northeast Nebraska into northeast Iowa, including northwest portions of the Omaha metro. Other cities included in this warning are Wahoo, Fremont, Blair, Bennington, Tekamah, Missouri Valley, Onawa, Decatur, and Herman. Wind gusts up to 60mph are possible with this line of storms as it pushes to the northeast.

8 p.m. Update — A line of strong to severe storms continues to push east across Nebraska. Severe Thunderstorm Warnings are in effect from near Tekamah through Fremont, Wahoo, and Lincoln until 8:15pm. Wind gusts up to 60mph are possible with these storms as they push east. There are signs the storms are weakening, but some stronger storms are possible in the metro by 9pm.

Overnight and extended forecast —

The cold front sparking this line of storms will continue to move E with mainly weak storms clearing out of W Iowa shortly after midnight.

Cooler air will filter in overnight with morning temperatures dropping into the mid and upper 50s Wednesday. Patchy clouds will roll through though we should still see a fair bit of sunshine. Temperatures will be quite a bit cooler than the past few days, afternoon highs topping out in the upper 60s and low 70s. That puts us much closer to average for this time of year.

Even chillier weather is expected later this week as highs dip into the upper 50s and low 60s for Friday and Saturday. We may even see our first chance for frost Friday night or Saturday night as low temperatures try to dip into the upper 30s. This should not be a killing freeze, but it will certainly feel pretty chilly leading into the weekend. Temperatures rebound back into the 70s by Sunday, and potentially make a run back at 80s degrees next week.
