The investigation will look into claims of unsafe living conditions, excessive force by correctional officers, widespread violence leading to serious injuries and deaths, lack of access to mental and medical care for inmates, and potential discrimination against inmates with psychiatric disabilities by Fulton County and the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office. Attorney General Merrick Garland stated that basic civil rights protections should be provided to those in prisons and jails. The DOJ aims to determine whether there are systemic violations of federal law and how to address them. This investigation follows the death of Lashawn Thompson, who died in a bedbug-infested cell in the jail’s psychiatric wing last year. The majority of inmates in the jail are Black, making the alleged problems a racial justice issue. Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division emphasized the need for constitutional conditions in jail facilities and stated that investigations into various facilities in multiple states are ongoing.
