Problems Arise for Nikon Z8 Users When Mounting Lenses

The release of the Nikon Z8—the “baby Z9”!—has been met with plenty of excitement in photography circles. We were certainly very impressed with the Z9 as a tool for underwater shooters, so with its very similar specs but smaller form factor and much lower price, the Z8 is likely to be a very attractive option for many. Unfortunately, some users have recently begun reporting problems with mounting lenses on the new camera.

In service advisories issued in the U.S., Japan and Europe on June 23rd, Nikon wrote: “Users of the Z8 camera have informed us that in some rare cases, a lens cannot be mounted on the camera because the lens cannot be rotated to the locked position. Based on our investigation into the matter, it has become clear that this issue may occur with Z8 cameras. We have identified a range of Z8 camera serial numbers with which the issue may occur and will address the issue as follows. Nikon will repair affected Z8 cameras at no cost to the customer, including the cost of shipping affected Z8 cameras to Nikon, as well as their return to customers, even if the warranty has expired.”

Nikon is encouraging Z8 owners to enter their serial numbers into its specially created Z8 service advisory webpage to see if their cameras are in the affected batch. Nikon says “instructions for requesting service, including receiving your free return shipping label, will be displayed onscreen” if your camera is affected. If not, Nikon says, “you may continue using your camera without concern for this issue.”
