Lea Salonga, the renowned Filipino musical legend, has returned to the Broadway Theatre where her journey in Broadway began. This time, she is not portraying a Vietnamese, Chinese, or Japanese character, but an actual Filipino character. In a groundbreaking production called “Here Lies Love,” Salonga is joined by an all-Filipino cast and a team of mostly Filipino producers, including singer H.E.R, comedian Jo Koy, and Black Eyed Peas’ Apl.de.Ap. Reflecting on her previous role as the lead in “Miss Saigon” in 1991, Salonga never envisioned a Filipino-dominated production becoming a reality. While she has been a part of other all-Asian Broadway casts, the focus was never on Filipino culture. Salonga expressed her gratitude for being a part of this milestone, stating, “There’s absolutely no ‘effing way that I would have seen this happening. Ever.” The show “Here Lies Love” opens on July 20 and portrays the dictatorship of Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos and the pro-democracy People Power Revolution movement of the 1970s and ‘80s. The production has received both praise for its representation and criticism for turning a controversial period of history into a musical. However, Salonga believes the show is more about the sacrifices made by anti-Marcos leaders, such as Ninoy Aquino. Despite the controversy, the cast members, including Salonga, have embraced their roles in telling this Filipino story. Salonga’s involvement in the show as both a performer and a producer has been a magical experience, and she hopes to continue supporting projects she believes in as a Broadway producer. The production of “Here Lies Love” adds to a series of Filipino American entertainment “firsts” in recent years, highlighting the growing presence and recognition of Filipino culture and talent.
