Last Words of a Murder Victim: ‘You’re causing my demise’

A man from New South Wales (NSW) who stabbed another man to death is being remembered as a relaxed and easygoing person, while his killer is awaiting sentencing for murder. Samuel Campbell, 23, pleaded guilty to murdering Nicholas Robertson, 38, in Cooma in February 2021 during a drug-induced psychosis. He also pleaded guilty to wounding his friend Zane Kouaider during the attack. Kouaider considered Robertson a father figure and described him as his best friend in a victim impact statement. Since the incident, Kouaider has experienced anxiety and night terrors. Campbell, who was dressed in prison attire, appeared remorseful as the statement was read. The court heard that Campbell became increasingly paranoid after using methamphetamine, leading up to the murder. On the night of the crime, after a confrontation in the car, Campbell stabbed Kouaider and then stabbed Robertson multiple times, while Robertson pleaded for his life. Kouaider managed to drive Robertson to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. Campbell was arrested shortly after and charged. The prosecution argued that although there was no evidence of premeditation, Campbell had the intent to kill. The defense argued that Campbell only meant to incapacitate the victims due to delusions that they would harm him. Campbell has a history of drug use and has been diagnosed with severe substance use disorder. The sentencing will take place later this month.
