Novak Djokovic, the 23-time Grand Slam winner, has been fined a significant amount for smashing his racket during the Wimbledon final against Carlos Alcaraz. The incident occurred in the fifth set of Djokovic’s defeat, when he failed to break Alcaraz’s serve and expressed his frustration by forcefully smashing his racket against one of the net poles, causing damage. Umpire Fergus Murphy promptly issued Djokovic a warning for this code violation. As a consequence, a fine of £6,117 has been imposed on the seven-time Wimbledon champion, which will be deducted from his runner-up prize money of 1.175 million pounds. Alcaraz capitalized on the opportunity and went on to secure a victory, denying Djokovic his 24th Grand Slam title and ending his unbeaten streak at the Centre Court. In addition to the racket-smashing incident, Djokovic received two other code violations during the match. The first violation was due to exceeding the shot clock, while the second occurred when he violently destroyed his racket after falling behind in the fifth set. Djokovic was previously disqualified from the 2020 US Open for hitting a ball out of frustration, accidentally striking a line judge in the throat.
