NPR Identifies Travis King as the U.S. Soldier Who Entered North Korea

Barricades have been positioned near the Unification Bridge in Paju, South Korea. This bridge leads to the Panmunjom in the Demilitarized Zone. On Wednesday, July 19, 2023, an American soldier escaped from a South Korean prison and crossed the highly fortified border into North Korea, according to U.S. officials. This marks the first time an American has been detained in North Korea in almost five years.

The soldier in question is Pvt. 2nd Class Travis King, who has been serving as a calvary scout with the U.S. Army since January 2021. The 23-year-old had been held in a South Korean prison on assault charges before his release about a week ago. He was being escorted to an airport outside of Seoul to board a plane bound for Fort Bliss, Texas, where he was to face military disciplinary action. However, he managed to escape from his escort and returned to the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea. There, dressed in civilian clothes, he joined a tour of the Korean border village of Panmunjom and then ran between two buildings into North Korea, as described by a member of the tour group.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin stated during a press conference that they believe King is now in the custody of North Korea. However, there has been no official word from North Korea regarding the situation. King’s mother, Claudine Gates, expressed shock and disbelief at the news, stating that she doesn’t believe her son would do something like this. The motives behind King’s escape are still unclear, and some experts believe that planning a trip to the Demilitarized Zone usually takes several days.

The soldier’s detention poses a diplomatic challenge for the U.S., as it does not have formal diplomatic relations with North Korea. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un may attempt to use this incident for political gain. In the past, other U.S. citizens have been detained by North Korea, with their release often occurring in exchange for diplomatic negotiations or high-level visits.
