Insights from Defense Analysts on What Lies Ahead

Soldiers from the 110th Brigade, a Territorial Defense unit, are operating a drone in Novodarivka settlement in Luhansk, Ukraine. However, Ukraine’s counteroffensive has been slower than expected, leading military analysts to warn that the opportunity to break through Russian defenses and make territorial gains may soon close. While Ukraine prepared for the counteroffensive and awaited support from international allies, Russian forces fortified their positions along a 900-kilometer front line. Ukraine now faces successive lines of Russian defenses consisting of minefields, anti-tank obstacles, and extensive networks of trenches and bunkers. The biggest challenge for Ukraine is the limited time frame for breaking through Russia’s defenses, with only a few summer months remaining. If the first phase of the counteroffensive, designed to identify weaknesses in the Russian frontline, lasts too long, Ukraine may be forced to deploy military units meant for the second phase sooner than planned. The weather is also a time constraint, with Ukraine’s muddy season in the fall making the offensive more challenging. Despite these challenges, Ukraine’s forces are still conducting counteroffensive actions and have reclaimed around 210 square kilometers of occupied territory. However, progress is slow and the battle is expected to be attritional. The objective is to continue pushing forward and liberating territory in a slow manner, with a focus on degrading Russian forces in the north to increase the tempo of ground attacks. Ukraine’s allies, including the US, continue to support Ukraine and believe the counteroffensive is not a failure, emphasizing that the fight will be long, hard, and bloody.
