The video features Sivan participating in keg stands and dancing on a crowded dance floor throughout the night, while also highlighting his queer sexuality, similar to his previous videos for “Bloom” and “Lucky Strike.”
Unfortunately, some fans were disappointed with the lack of body diversity in the video, as it mainly featured thin or muscular men. This sparked backlash from fans, who felt that the video did not include representation for different body types. Sivan acknowledged this criticism in a recent interview with Billboard, admitting that they overlooked the issue.
Sivan expressed his understanding of the critique, stating that they did not intend to exclude any specific type of person from the video. He explained that the lack of diversity was not a deliberate choice, but rather a result of not putting much thought into it during the video production.
However, he also noted that some of the criticism directed at “Rush” was misguided. Sivan revealed that he had experienced body-shaming in the past and mentioned an article that criticized the lack of body diversity while simultaneously making derogatory comments about his own body. This saddened him, as he believes that everyone’s body is beautiful and it is hurtful to see people making derogatory remarks about others’ appearances.
“Rush” serves as the lead single for Sivan’s upcoming third album, “Something To Give Each Other,” set to be released in October. The album has been described as a celebration of various themes, including sex, dance, sweat, community, queerness, love, and friendship.
