Former President Trump expressed his frustration with his ongoing legal issues on Truth Social on Sunday, accusing the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the investigating prosecutors of politicization.
The DOJ appears to be nearing the potential filing of charges against Trump for his involvement in the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021, and his broader attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results. Last week, Trump announced that he had received a letter informing him of being a target in the investigation and had four days to decide whether to appear before the grand jury.
Trump and his allies have criticized the DOJ and special counsel Jack Smith, alleging political bias behind the investigations and charges filed against him. On Sunday, Trump reiterated these attacks.
Trump posted on Truth Social, “Every time you see these Radical Lunatics and their partners in the Fake News Media talking about the ‘Trials and Tribulations’ of President Donald J. Trump, please remember that it is all a coordinated HOAX… in order to STEAL ANOTHER ELECTION through PROSECUTORIAL MISCONDUCT at levels never seen before in the U.S.”
In another post, he said, “[Attorney General] Merrick Garland, Deranged Jack Smith, and coordinating Democrat ‘Prosecutors’ in New York and Atlanta, have become the Campaign Managers for the most corrupt and incompetent President in United States history, Joe Biden!”
Trump already faces charges in Manhattan for falsifying business records related to hush money payments made to Stormy Daniels, and in federal court in Florida for various counts associated with mishandling classified and sensitive documents, potentially violating the Espionage Act.
Smith, overseeing both the document-related investigations and the inquiries into the 2020 election, stressed the seriousness of the charges against Trump. He defended the conduct of the DOJ and FBI in these cases, indirectly responding to the criticism they received from Trump and his allies.
In addition, Trump criticized the amount of money spent on investigations into him, particularly those led by Smith. A recent DOJ report disclosed that Smith’s investigation cost $5.4 million during the first five months, with other DOJ agencies spending an additional $3.8 million. On the other hand, the report revealed that Robert Hur, the special counsel investigating President Biden’s handling of classified documents, spent $615,000, with assisting agencies spending $570,000.
