Tech Entrepreneur Andrew Findlay Found Deceased One Week Following Sydney Boating Tragedy

The body of a tech entrepreneur has been recovered a week after he went missing in a boating accident that also killed a prominent art dealer on Sydney Harbour.

Father-of-three Andrew Findlay, 51, was presumed dead after a fishing trip with a friend, art dealer Tim Klingender, took a dire turn at The Gap near Watsons Bay on July 20.

Klingender’s body was found by police amid debris off Watsons Bay later that day, while an extensive week-long search turned to a recovery mission for Findlay.

Police on Thursday confirmed Findlay’s body had been found not far from where Klingender’s body was retrieved.

“About 2.10pm Wednesday, a fisherman observed a body approximately 150m south of ‘The Gap’,” NSW Police said.

“Water Police responded and recovered the body, now confirmed to be a 51-year-old man from a boating accident last Thursday, July 20.”

Police believe rough swells with 5m waves pushed the 7.8m inflatable fishing boat the pair had been fishing in onto rocks, throwing them both overboard.

Marine Area Command Superintendent Joe McNulty said neither of the friends were wearing life jackets when they were thrown overboard.

McNulty said it appeared the pair had been swept by a large wave that possibly capsized the boat and threw them into the water, adding the pair was travelling too close to the cliff face.

“This is a tragic accident, a tragic accident we believe could have been avoided,” he said on Saturday.

“Those large swell have contributed to the loss of two good men.

“Know your abilities, know your environment and the conditions.”

Police on Saturday announced the search for Findlay’s body would be scaled back after extensive efforts to find the missing man.

“We threw the police divers at it and they searched 1000m of shoreline and underwater areas looking for the second person,” McNulty said.

The four-tonne vessel the men were in is still lodged tight against the rocks under the cliffs at South Head, with police attempting to recover evidence from it.

A brief of evidence will be prepared for the coroner.
