The Troubling Presence of a Fatal Drinking Problem on TikTok

Carla Garson’s memories of her final TikTok Live with her partner, 23-year-old David Lee Perez, on December 26, 2022, are hazy. The couple gained some fame during the summer of that year through their TikTok account, Operation Hangover, where they would take shots on livestream in exchange for cash. They would sit in their basement and keep track of the drinks they consumed on a whiteboard for their audience. As their streams grew in popularity, they started drinking heavily, especially during the holiday season when more people were available to watch and pay them. They charged between $5 and $15 per shot, but their earnings varied each night. Sometimes they made around $500, while on other nights it could be as low as $50. Drinking on their livestreams became a regular occurrence, with Perez occasionally chugging straight liquor, especially when stressed. Garson wanted to transition their TikTok content from drinking to cooking and music in 2023 as they were both miserable towards the end of their drinking streams. On their last livestream, which had a larger crowd than usual, Garson recalls drinking 11 shots while Perez had 14 shots and two beers. Perez also chugged an entire Four Loko on the livestream, which was purchased for him by a TikTok creator. Garson doesn’t remember much after that as she was blackout drunk. She recalls finding Perez unresponsive and called 911, not realizing that their livestream was still broadcasting audio to an audience of 280 people. Viewers commented in real time, some expressing concern and others being insensitive. Eventually, the livestream turned to static, with only viewers’ messages and a “rising star” label visible on the screen. Despite Garson’s attempts and the efforts of paramedics, Perez was pronounced dead at the scene. Since then, Garson has vowed to raise awareness about the dangers of alcohol-based TikToks and the partnerships and sponsorships that promote alcoholism. TikTok stated that such content would be a breach of their policies.
