The city of San Francisco is currently investigating a large “X” sign that was recently placed on top of the former Twitter headquarters building. This action is part of owner Elon Musk’s rebranding of the social media platform. City officials have stated that obtaining a permit is necessary for changing letters or symbols on a building or for erecting a sign on top of it, in order to ensure design and safety standards are met. The appearance of the “X” came after San Francisco police halted workers from removing the original bird and logo from the building, citing safety concerns for pedestrians. As per the Department of Building Inspection, any replacement letters or symbols must be permitted to maintain consistency with the building’s historic nature and secure attachment. Patrick Hannan, spokesperson for the department, confirmed that a permit is also required for installing a sign on top of the building. The city has initiated a complaint and launched an investigation into the matter. Elon Musk introduced the new “X” logo to replace Twitter’s well-known blue bird, as he continues to reshape the platform he acquired for $44 billion in 2022. The “X” has already started appearing at the top of the desktop version of Twitter. Musk, who is also CEO of Tesla, has a personal affinity for the letter “X” and had already renamed Twitter’s corporate name to X Corp. after acquiring it. Furthermore, one of his children is referred to as “X,” with their actual name being a combination of letters and symbols. On Friday afternoon, a worker made adjustments to the sign using a lift machine before leaving.
