The U.S. Southwest has been experiencing a historic heat wave throughout July, transforming the region into a scorching furnace. However, relief is on the horizon as monsoon rains are finally making a late appearance, causing temperatures to gradually decrease. On Saturday, metro Phoenix reached a high temperature of over 110 degrees Fahrenheit for the 30th consecutive day, surpassing the previous record set in 1974. Despite the potential for damaging winds, dust storms, and flash flooding associated with monsoon thunderstorms, there is hope that Sunday’s precipitation will bring some much-needed cooling. The excessive heat has also taken a toll on wildlife, as evidenced by a bear found cooling off in a Jacuzzi in Burbank, California. This extreme heat is not limited to the Southwest, as it has also spread to the eastern part of the United States, breaking records and causing adverse weather conditions such as flash floods. It is crucial for vulnerable populations, including older adults and those without access to air conditioning, to take precautions in order to stay safe. Maricopa County in Arizona has already reported 25 heat-associated deaths this year, with more under investigation. While temperatures are expected to decrease next week in various parts of Arizona, New Mexico, and Nevada, they will still remain dangerously high.
