Lady Gaga, 36, has expressed her feelings about the passing of her close friend and collaborator, Tony Bennett. In a heartfelt Instagram tribute, she shared a photo of herself embracing Tony and wrote that she will “forever miss my friend. I will miss singing, recording, and talking with him. Being on stage together was a magical experience. Tony and I transported ourselves to another time, modernized the music, and brought it to life as a singing duo. But it wasn’t just an act. Our connection was very real.”
Lady Gaga revealed that she has been mourning Tony’s loss for quite some time due to his battle with Alzheimer’s. Although losing her dear friend to the disease has been painful, she described it as a “beautiful” journey. She emphasized that the era of memory loss is sacred and brings forth vulnerability and a desire to preserve dignity.
The significant age difference of five decades between them didn’t hinder their bond; in fact, it provided something unique and special that they didn’t have with others. Tony passed away on July 21, 2023, seven years after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2016. He continued performing despite his illness until February 2021 when he publicly announced his diagnosis. He retired from performing in August of that year due to concerns about his physical well-being.
To bid farewell to his career, Tony chose to retire in style, sharing the stage with his dear friend Lady Gaga. They performed two sold-out shows at Radio City Music Hall in New York City in August 2021. The first show coincided with Tony’s 95th birthday, and Lady Gaga led the entire audience in singing to him. Lady Gaga shared her emotional experience during these special shows in an interview with 60 Minutes. She revealed that she was moved when Tony introduced her on stage, as it had been a long time since he had said her name. She held back her emotions to fulfill her role as they had a sold-out show to deliver, but she cherished the moment when Tony recognized her.
The farewell shows, titled “One Last Time: An Evening with Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga,” preceded the release of their second album together, “Love for Sale.” Their first collaborative album, “Cheek to Cheek,” reached number one on the Billboard 200 chart, and their second album peaked at number eight. Lady Gaga never stopped expressing her love for Tony throughout the years and even dedicated the song “Always Remember Us This Way” to him during one of her Chromatica Ball tour performances. She expressed her gratitude for Tony’s wife, Susan, who is by his side every day, and she concluded her dedication by saying she wants to remember their bond just as it is.
