There has been a rise in cases of conjunctivitis in schools, specifically a type known as flu-related conjunctivitis. Conjunctivitis, also known as pink eye, is an eye condition characterized by inflammation or infection of the conjunctiva, which is the clear membrane that surrounds the eyelid and part of the eyeball. This condition can be caused by bacteria, viruses, allergies, or exposure to chemicals.
Flu-related conjunctivitis is predominantly caused by a viral infection and typically progresses on its own schedule. Symptoms of this infection include eye discomfort, redness, the feeling of something in the eye, impaired vision, and sensitivity to light. It is important to seek medical attention if these symptoms develop.
There are five types of conjunctivitis that people should be aware of:
1. Allergic Conjunctivitis: This type is the result of an allergic reaction to environmental allergens such as pollen, pet dander, dust, or mold. Symptoms include swollen eyelids, excessive tearing, itching, and redness in the eyes. Treatment often involves the use of eye drops or nasal sprays to reduce irritation and swelling.
2. Bacterial Conjunctivitis: This type is caused by bacteria such as Haemophilus influenza, Streptococcus pneumonia, or Staphylococcus aureus. Symptoms include redness, itching, and discharge from the eyes, which may be yellow or green. Antibiotic eye drops or ointments are commonly used to eliminate the infection.
3. Viral Conjunctivitis: Viruses like adenovirus, herpes simplex virus (HSV), or varicella-zoster virus (VZV) are responsible for this form of conjunctivitis. Symptoms include fever, body aches, redness, irritation, and watery eyes, similar to flu-like symptoms. Antiviral eye drops or ointments, along with over-the-counter cold remedies, are used to treat symptoms.
4. Chemical Conjunctivitis: Exposure to chemicals such as chlorine or detergents can cause this type of conjunctivitis. Symptoms include excessive tearing, redness, and stinging in the eyes. Treatment usually involves the use of lubricating eye drops or ointments to reduce irritation.
5. Giant Papillary Conjunctivitis: This type occurs as an allergic reaction to contact lenses or foreign substances in the eye, such as dirt or dust particles. Symptoms include increased sensitivity to light, poor vision while wearing contact lenses, itching, and redness in the eyes. Treatment may include artificial tears to soothe the eyes and, if necessary, antibiotics.
It is important to note that there are different types of conjunctivitis, and each may have slightly different symptoms and causes. If you suspect you have conjunctivitis, it is best to seek medical advice for proper diagnosis and treatment.
During the monsoon season, it is crucial to take precautions to prevent the spread of conjunctivitis. These include wearing dark glasses, maintaining distance from others, avoiding the use of towels, handkerchiefs, and contact lenses, refraining from swimming and spending excessive time in the sun, and avoiding congested areas.
The most common symptoms of conjunctivitis include red or pink eyes, eye discharge (which may be watery, sticky, or thick and yellow or green), itching or irritation, tearing, and sensitivity to light. It is essential to visit a doctor for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment, regardless of the type of conjunctivitis experienced.
