Regional body threatens force as Niger coup prompts condemnation from Russia and the West

NIAMEY, Niger – July 30, 2023: Following the coup in Niger, supporters of the military junta took to the streets carrying Nigerien and Russian flags. In response, West African leaders threatened military action against the junta, while protesters stormed the French embassy in Niamey. The coup, led by General Abdourahmane Tchiani, overthrew democratically-elected President Mohamed Bazoum and his government, citing national security and corruption. The U.S., France, and the international community strongly condemned the coup. The junta has so far ignored international calls to restore the elected government to power. Russia has called for Bazoum’s release, and Wagner Group mercenary boss Yevgeny Prigozhin expressed support for the coup. The West African regional body ECOWAS imposed sanctions and gave the junta one week to return the government to power. However, analysts predict that the coup is likely to succeed, resulting in either a power handover or Bazoum’s exile. This would make Niger the fourth ECOWAS country under military rule. The coup has economic and commercial implications, particularly for France and the EU, as Niger is a major global uranium producer. It may also impact West African security and EU nuclear power if the availability of uranium is reduced. Some analysts believe the coup stems from domestic tensions between elite military units and the government. The situation in Niger’s security is not as dire as its neighboring countries, and there may not be a need for Russian assistance in replacing Western military support.
