(NEXSTAR) — An estimated $1.05 billion Mega Millions jackpot will once again be up for grabs on Tuesday night, giving lottery players a chance to break a long streak of bad luck. The current jackpot has been growing steadily since April when a ticketholder in New York won a $20 million prize. Since then, 46 players have won second-tier prizes worth $1 million or more. The chances of winning the Mega Millions jackpot are 1 in 302.6 million, making the odds quite difficult. However, the odds of winning smaller prizes are significantly better. The largest Mega Millions jackpots in history have reached $1.537 billion, $1.348 billion, and $1.337 billion. The current $1.05 billion jackpot is for a sole winner who chooses to collect through an annuity, or they can choose a lump sum payment of approximately $527.9 million. Winners will also be subject to federal and state taxes. The most common Mega Millions numbers are 17, 10, 14, 31, and 4, with the most common Mega ball number being 22. The biggest jackpot in Mega Millions history was $1.537 billion in 2018 and was won by a single winner in South Carolina. Mega Millions is played in 45 states and the District of Columbia, with tickets costing $2. There are nine possible ways to win a prize, and drawings are held at 11 p.m. ET on Tuesdays and Fridays.
