Gurugram’s Targeted Violence: Shops Burnt, Imam Killed, and Mosque Torched During Nuh Clashes

Gurugram: Maulana Saad, 22, was tragically killed in an act of violence on Tuesday. The naib imam of the Anjuman Jama Masjid in Gurugram’s Sector 57 was brutally beaten and stabbed to death while the attackers chanted ‘Jai Shree Ram’, according to witnesses. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning when a mob of 90-100 Hindu vigilantes allegedly entered the mosque, set it on fire, and attacked Saad. Another mosque caretaker, Khurshid Alam, was also injured in the attack. Later in the day, multiple Muslim-owned establishments in Gurugram’s Badshahpur were set on fire, specifically targeting these businesses and identified through their names on the hoardings. Hindu-owned shops in the vicinity were left unscathed. These incidents followed communal clashes during a religious procession the day prior in Nuh district, which resulted in the deaths of two home guards and injured 15 others. Three more people, including Maulana Saad, were killed in subsequent violence. The Gurugram police have received a report of the incident and are investigating. Security measures have been heightened around religious sites, and the police and administration are engaging with local community leaders to ensure peace. Internet services have been suspended in certain areas and the state government has banned the sale of loose petrol and diesel. The atmosphere in both affected areas – Sector 57 and Badshahpur – remains tense and fearful. Witnesses reported that the attackers were vengeful for the incidents that occurred in Nuh and held the entire Muslim community responsible. They express concerns that more violence is likely to occur. Maulana Saad, who had been working at the mosque for the past seven months, never spoke against any religion and was killed simply because of his affiliation with the masjid. The police believe that Saad was stabbed multiple times based on initial observations. The investigation is ongoing and the post-mortem report is pending.
