Grieving Family of Decklan Hayward, Who Tragically Choked on a Frankfurt at Glenroi Heights Public School, Faces Heartrending Choice

The family of a young NSW schoolboy who choked on a cocktail frankfurt at school say they have made the heartbreaking decision to turn off his life support

Decklan Hayward, 7, was dropped off at Glenroi Heights Public School in Orange on Wednesday, July 19.

However, hours later Decklan’s mother got a call from the school advising her that he had been involved in a “choking incident”.

The mother was told Decklan had been laughing and playing with his friends during a nutritional program when he began to choke on the frankfurt.

Paramedics tended to the boy, however, he was left with no oxygen for 20 minutes and went into cardiac arrest.

He was flown to Westmead Children’s Hospital in Sydney with extensive brain damage and was placed on life support.

A GoFundMe page organised by Decklan’s aunty Kaylah Hayward revealed the parents had made the heartbreaking decision to turn off his life support.

“Unfortunately after eight days on life support my Sister Katie and Robbie have had to make a decision that no parent should ever have to and that is to let our boy grow his wings and go with the angels some time next week,” she said on Friday.

Glenroi Heights Public School principal Tegan Davis has also posted a letter to parents on social media on behalf of the Hayward family which revealed the family was considering turning off life support sometime this week.

“Our thoughts are with Decklan’s family at this time,” she said.

“Thank you to our school community for your continued care and support for Decklan and his family.”

Meanwhile, Decklan’s aunty Kaylah Hayward said the schoolboy was a “joyful”, “adorable” and “beautiful” boy who made everyone laugh.

“Anyone that ever met Decky knows he was the most bubbly happy funny kid, and he will always have a special place in so many of our hearts,” she said.
