Five Identified by CHP as Fatalities in I-5 Crash in Northern California

CORNING — The California Highway Patrol in Red Bluff released the names Tuesday of the five people who died in Saturday’s fatal crash on Interstate 5 south of Corning.

One of the dead was Randall Schriefer, 52, of Morgan Hill, who was traveling with his wife, Kelly Schriefer, 48, who, according to the press release, was transported to an Enloe Medical Center with major injuries.

Randall Schriefer was a recently retired San Jose Police Department captain.

The Schriefers were traveling southbound in a 2003 Dodge Ram pulling a trailer when a 2003 Infiniti traveling at an unknown speed, driven by Shawn Chastain 48, of San Diego, left the northbound lane, crossed the center divide and struck the Dodge Ram.

According to the press release, the other three people in the car were all from San Diego. Thomas Bruce 47, Patti Larsen, 36, and an 8-year-old girl, along with Chastain were all ejected from the car and died. The CHP says none of them were wearing seat belts.

The CHP also reports that Larsen was seven months pregnant and the fetus was killed in the wreck. CHP’s major accident investigative team (MAIT) is continuing the investigation.

Jason Thinnes, the MAIT lead, said Tuesday morning that the investigation could take up to six months to complete. Whether drugs or alcohol were involved in the accident is still under investigation. He added that CHP isn’t ready to comment on why Chastain came across the roadway.
