By Olivia Wynkoop | Bay City News

San Francisco’s iconic cable cars celebrated their 150th anniversary in style, with a birthday celebration in downtown San Francisco. The cable car, which has become a classic symbol of the city, first operated on city streets on August 2, 1873. As city officials and historically accurate costume-wearers posed in front of a cable car adorned with dahlias at the Powell and Market streets turnaround, a vibrant crowd gathered to take photographs and celebrate. Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, D-San Francisco, highlighted the significance of the cable car’s innovative past during the ceremony. The event featured historical reenactors, including a group of people who hopped on board a cable car to commemorate the transportation method’s invention 150 years ago. San Francisco Mayor London Breed, along with city officials and community members, also joined in celebrating the milestone.
