Instagram Implements New Feature to Shield Users from Unwanted DM Requests

Instagram, owned by Meta, has introduced new features to protect users from unwanted direct message (DM) requests. This feature was tested in June and is now being rolled out. The new restrictions apply to users who want to send DM requests to people who don’t follow them. Firstly, they can only send one message instead of multiple requests. Secondly, DM invites are now only text-based, and users can only send multimedia messages after the recipient accepts the chat invitation. These restrictions aim to prevent users from receiving unwanted images or videos from strangers or being continuously messaged by them. Instagram aims to give users more confidence and control over their inbox. The platform already has measures in place to protect users, such as the “Hidden Words” setting that filters offensive content and the “Limits” feature that guards against sudden increases in unwanted comments or DM requests. In July, Instagram introduced upgrades to its Reels templates and announced the rollout of real-time avatar calls on Instagram and Messenger, providing users with an alternative to showing their real faces during video calls.
