Parents of murdered teenager Michelle Bright confront killer Craig Rumsby as a “monster” in court

The family of a NSW teenager who was brutally murdered over twenty years ago appeared in court to express the ongoing pain they experience from her violent death. Michelle Bright, 17, was killed after leaving a friend’s 15th birthday party. Her body was discovered hidden in long grass beside the road in Gulgong in February 1999. The jury recently found Craig Henry Rumsby guilty of her murder, as well as of intent to rape another woman in January 1998. In an emotional sentence hearing in the NSW Supreme Court in Dubbo on Friday, Michelle’s family testified about the profound impact of her murder. Michelle’s mother, Loraine Bright, stated that her daughter was her “greatest joy” and that losing Michelle in such a brutal manner has left a permanent void in her heart. Michelle’s father, Gregory Bright, described Rumsby as a “monster” and expressed his disbelief at the utter disregard for human life displayed by the defendant. Michelle’s older brother, Leslie Bright, explained how the news of her murder shattered their family, and how they continue to miss her every single day. The court also heard from a victim of Rumsby’s violent attack in 1998, who described the ongoing fear and flashbacks she experiences. The court was informed that Rumsby’s violence was sexually motivated and that he had exhibited similar behavior as recently as 2019. The defense acknowledged the seriousness of Rumsby’s crimes but highlighted his history of low intellectual functioning. Sentencing will occur at a later date.
