Public Charging Scam: How to Determine if Your Phone Has Been Hacked
Malware or spyware can cause performance issues and an increase in pop-ups on your smartphone. Recently, there has been a rise in cases of the ‘Juice Jacking’ scam, where scammers hack into your phone via public charging ports. It is advised to avoid charging your phone in public ports to prevent falling victim to this scam.
‘Juice Jacking’ Scam: What is it?
‘Juice Jacking’ is a cyber attack where a compromised USB charging station transfers malware or steals personal information from a connected device. This scam is not limited to just cell phones, but any device that can be charged via a USB plug.
Signs to Determine if Your Phone is Hacked
1. Performance issues: If your phone suddenly experiences performance issues, such as slowing down or turning on and off by itself, there is a possibility that it has been hacked.
2. Mystery apps: If you notice apps on your phone that you haven’t downloaded, texts or emails that you haven’t sent, or a spike in data usage, it may indicate that your phone has been compromised.
3. Pop-ups: An increase in pop-ups and changes on your home screen can be a sign that your smartphone has been hacked due to malware or spyware.
4. Overheating: If your phone drains its battery quickly and becomes excessively hot, it may suggest the presence of spyware or malware. Check for any technical or battery power issues in your smartphone.
