In southern Pakistan, a passenger train derailed near Nawabshah, resulting in the deaths of 30 people and injuries to over 90 others. The incident occurred when ten cars of the Hazara Express train went off the tracks near the Sarhari railway station while en route from Karachi to Rawalpindi. Some of the cars overturned in the crash, causing significant damage. Local residents and rescue teams worked together to extract trapped passengers, particularly women, children, and the elderly. Senior railway officer Mahmoodur Rehman Lakho confirmed that the rescue operation was successfully completed by the evening, and the injured were transported to the People’s Hospital in Nawabshah. Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif expressed his condolences and prayed for the souls of the deceased and the speedy recovery of the injured. A police officer at the scene reported that seven of his family members and 22 others from his neighborhood were still missing. Train traffic on the main line was suspended as repair crews were deployed, and alternate travel arrangements were made for affected passengers. However, passengers at Karachi station voiced frustrations with the poor railway system and the changing departure times. Minister for Railways Khwaja Saad Rafiq stated that an investigation was launched to determine the cause of the derailment, and military and paramilitary troops assisted in the rescue efforts. Train accidents are common in Pakistan due to inadequate maintenance and outdated safety standards.
