LOS ANGELES (AP) — Megan Thee Stallion revealed in a written statement that she has been suffering daily since Tory Lanez shot her in the feet three years ago. This statement was read during Lanez’s sentencing, which is expected to continue into Tuesday. In her statement, Megan expressed that she has not experienced a single day of peace since the incident and that she is slowly healing but will never be the same. Although she struggled with whether to appear in person to give the statement, she decided against it because she could not bring herself to be in the same room as Lanez again. Despite her absence, Megan asked Judge David Herriford to issue a strong sentence. Prosecutors are seeking a 13-year sentence for Lanez, who was convicted of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, having a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence. Lanez’s lawyers argue that he should only receive probation and be released to enter a substance abuse program, and they plan to appeal his conviction. Throughout the trial, Megan testified that Lanez had fired the gun at the back of her feet and demanded that she dance as she walked away from the SUV they were in. Lanez’s father, Sonstar Peterson, spoke in court about the family’s personal struggles, as well as Lanez’s charitable giving and his role as a father. Numerous witnesses, including rapper Iggy Azalea, wrote letters to Judge Herriford, asking for a transformative rather than life-destroying sentence. The judge considered various factors presented by both sides but did not indicate what sentence he will give. Megan emphasized Lanez’s lack of remorse and attempts to intimidate her through social media and song lyrics in her statement. She also mentioned Lanez’s recent use of his childhood trauma to manipulate the situation. Sonstar Peterson apologized to the judge for his outburst after the verdict and expressed regret for his actions. Lanez released his first mixtape in 2009 and has gained popularity since then, while Megan Thee Stallion’s career has soared, winning a Grammy for Best New Artist in 2021 and achieving chart-topping hits.
