Israeli Snake’s Tragic Encounter with Porcupine
A shocking incident unfolded in Shoham, Israel, when a snake was found dead with a porcupine stuck in its mouth. The incident took place earlier this week, near a local dog park, where dog owners spotted a motionless snake battling with a porcupine, according to the Jerusalem Post.
Reptile ecologist, Aviad Bar from the Nature and Parks Authority, assessed the situation and concluded that the non-venomous black whip snake had attempted to devour the porcupine. Bar noted that the snake must have realized the mistake it made when it tried to abandon the unusual meal, but couldn’t due to the porcupine’s quills.
Israel is home to three species of porcupines, known for their diet of small mammals, insects, birds, and reptiles, including snakes.
Contrary to common misconceptions, snakes play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of their ecosystems. The black whip snake, being the longest non-venomous reptile in Israel, helps control the rodent population. It is important to note that out of the 41 snake species in Israel, only nine are venomous, and snakes and porcupines are protected.
If you encounter a distressed animal, you can report it to the Parks and Nature Authority by calling *3639, and they will provide the necessary assistance.
