LG delivers on burn-in warranty for its OLED monitor, as requested by us

The future of monitors may lie in OLED technology, but concerns about burn-in need to be addressed first. Previously, LG’s warranty for its 27-inch OLED desktop gaming monitor did not cover burn-in resulting from improper usage. However, after discussions with The Verge, LG Electronics has now changed its warranty policy. According to Christopher De Maria, LG’s head of consumer PR for North America, the company now offers a two-year burn-in warranty for its OLED gaming monitor in the US. This warranty also applies retroactively to previously sold LG 27GR95QE-B monitors. Although the warranty does not explicitly state the coverage for burn-in, LG product marketing director David Park clarifies that burn-in is covered as long as the monitor is used as intended within a residential setting. “Normal use” refers to using the product for gaming (both professional and casual) and desktop computing. This change in warranty is significant as evidence of damage is often seen as abuse and can result in denial of warranty service. OLED enthusiasts and monitor manufacturers have warned against leaving the same content on the screen for extended periods of time to avoid burn-in. However, LG Display and Samsung Display, the companies that manufacture OLED panels, have implemented protections and brightness management features to prevent burn-in. LG Electronics finally confirmed the burn-in coverage in response to The Verge’s review. Acer and Asus, who also sell monitors with the same LG Display panel, do not cover burn-in. Dell’s Alienware and Corsair do offer three-year burn-in warranties for their OLED monitors. Dell’s VP of display technologies, Yoon Lee, states that the warranty is based on trust in the pixel refresh function to mitigate burn-in. LG’s move to provide a two-year burn-in warranty is a significant step, although some argue that it may not be sufficient for a device that can be used for a decade or more.
