Mercedes-AMG to Unveil Their New GT Model, Competing with the Porsche 911

Mercedes-AMG will reveal the next-generation version of its GT two-door coupe at this year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance car show in California, which runs from August 17 to 20.

The second-generation Mercedes-AMG GT two-door coupe has been captured a number of times already, including at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed crashing into a grass embankment. A photo of it also leaked earlier this year.

Design changes have been evolutionary. There’s still a large Panamericana grille with vertical chrome bars, as well as swept-back headlights. The fender vents appear slimmer than before.

The overall look is a bit more rounded-off than the previous-generation car, as with other recent Mercedes-Benz vehicles, but there are still muscular shoulders and short overhangs.

With the latest SL having been developed by AMG, the new GT will serve as a coupe counterpart and will share its Modular Sports Architecture (MSA) underpinnings.

Some of the SL’s powertrains, therefore, could make their way into the closed-roof GT, though it’s unclear whether the GT will retain the SL’s rear seats.

The SL range currently opens with the 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder SL 43, which features a 48V mild-hybrid system and produces 280kW of power and 480Nm of torque.

Above it sit the twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8-powered SL 55 4Matic+ and SL 63 4Matic+, with the former producing 350kW/700Nm and the latter producing 430kW/800Nm.

A number of plug-in hybrid GT prototypes have been spied as well. They may wear the 53 and 63 S E Performance nameplates.

The GT 63 S E Performance will likely use the 4.0-litre twin-turbo plug-in hybrid V8 powertrain from the unrelated AMG GT 63 S E Performance four-door coupe, which has total system outputs of 620kW and 1400Nm.

The less powerful GT 53, in contrast, could use a version of the turbocharged 2.0-litre plug-in hybrid powertrain seen in the new C 63 S E Performance which has total system outputs of 500kW and 1020Nm.

Beyond the reveal of the second-generation AMG GT two-door coupe, Mercedes-Benz will also show off a special-edition version of the AMG SL roadster. It’s unclear what this will be exactly at this stage.

The German carmaker will also show off a number of its current models and recent concept cars at Pebble Beach.
