Johnson is heading home to Adelaide after reporting for the Tasmania nightly news since 2016.

In a moving goodbye, Johnson said “this is it for me”.

“I arrived here in 2016 a bit wet behind the ears, still a little bit as well, and since then I’ve just fallen in love with Tasmania,” he said.

“I’ve been honestly truly overwhelmed by the messages and best wishes from so many people.

“I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has let me share their story or simply enjoy my work.”

Johnson also extended a heartfelt thanks to his colleagues, saying he has made it to this point on their shoulders.

“(They) have been so good to me and made this my world,” he said.

“I have loved it so much and I could never give Tasmania as much as Tasmania has given me.”

Presenter Louise Houbaer said, “we’ve absolutely loved having you here” before sharing a montage of moments of his seven years in Tasmania.

“We’re going to miss Tom because the thing about Tom is he does everything with passion and with a whole lot of love,” news anchor Kim Millar said.

“Everywhere he goes someone wants his autograph.”

Johnson joined the Tasmania team after starting his career as a reporter in Broken Hill.

His enthusiasm for local sport was recognised when he was awarded a Tasmanian Media Award for Sports Coverage in 2020 for his coverage on the challenges facing regional football in the state’s northwest.
