SANTA CLARA — Three undrafted rookies who impressed in 49ers’ training camp and the preseason got claimed off waivers Wednesday, a day after they failed to make the Niners’ initial 53-man roster.
Cornerback D’Shawn Jamison got acquired by the Carolina Panthers, and offensive linemen Keith Ismael and Ilm Manning were added to the Arizona Cardinals’ roster, according to NFL Media.
The Cardinals rank third in the waiver-wire order, and the Panthers are ninth, by virtue of last season’s records.
The 49ers were not awarded anyone off waivers; they have the third-lowest priority, behind the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles.
Typically, the 49ers compose their practice squad with players they’ve waived, which coach Kyle Shanahan alluded to Saturday: “Normally throughout a year, people go down and we like to bring people back that we know. We don’t like to just get random guys. So, if there’s people that have established relationships in here and have showed us they can fit in here, just because they’re not a part of our 53, it does not mean that they’re not going to have an opportunity to be a part of this team at some time in the year.”
Also waived Tuesday were defensive linemen Alex Barrett and Marlon Davidson; fullback Jack Colletto; offensive linemen Joey Fisher, Alfredo Gutierrez, Corey Luciano, Jason Poe, Leroy Watson; safeties Myles Hartsfield and Qwuantrezz Knight; linebackers Marcelino McCrary-Ball and Curtis Robinson; wide receivers Tay Martin and Isaiah Winstead; cornerback Tre Swilling.
Veterans who were released and are not exposed to the waiver wire: defensive ends Austin Bryant and Kerry Hyder Jr. (both are expected to re-sign today); defensive tackle T.Y. McGill; wide receivers Chris Conley, Anthony Miller and Willie Snead IV; and, running backs Brian Hill and Jeremy McNichols.
