Pilot killed as plane crashes during gender reveal party in Mexico

A pilot has been killed when his plane crashed during a gender reveal party in Mexico on Sunday.

Video posted online shows the plane releasing pink smoke as it flies over a couple, who were standing in front of an “Oh baby” sign, surrounded by pink and blue balloons.

The recording captures the moment the plane’s left wing appears to separate from the fuselage as it flies away.

The pilot died in hospital soon after the crash, authorities in Navolato, Sinaloa state, told CNN’s sister network CNN en Español.

Alan Francisco Rangel of the Sinaloa Red Cross said paramedics treated the pilot at the crash site in San Pedro, Navolato and then took him to a local hospital where he died.

Authorities did not release the pilot’s name, and the cause of the crash is not clear.

No further injuries were reported.

Gender reveal parties were conceived as a fun way for couples to tell family and friends whether they were about to welcome a girl or a boy into the world.

Originally low-key affairs involving the cutting of a cake, revealing a blue or pink interior, some expectant parents now opt for more expensive — and sometimes risky — gender reveals.

A 2017 reveal in Arizona invited guests to shoot at a makeshift target scrawled with the words “Boy” and “Girl.”

When the target — packed with the highly explosive Tannerite — exploded, a blue cloud was emitted — and immediately ignited the surrounding brush.

The party ended up costing the hosts more than $8 million in restitution over the ensuing 19,000ha wildfire.

And at an Iowa gender reveal in October 2019, the family unintentionally built a pipe bomb — which, when it went off, sent shrapnel flying that hit and killed a grandmother standing nearby.
