2023 Nissan Ariya EV recalled for software error that could lead to a crash!

Nissan North America, Inc. is recalling certain 2023 Ariya electric crossover SUVs for a potential drive motor-related software error, as per reports filed by the company with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The inverter software may detect a short circuit and shut down the EV system, resulting in a loss of drive power.

The affected model includes MY2023 Nissan Ariya EVmanufactured between June 17, 2022 and May 19, 2023 at the Tochigi plant in Japan.

The new Nexon is offered in Smart, Smart+, Smart+ S, Pure, Pure S, Creative, Creative+, Creative+ S, Fearless, Fearless S and Fearless+ S. The ‘+’ option gets additional features whereas the S denotes the addition of the sunroof in each variant.

Moreover, both the 2WD and 4WD models of the Ariya are affected. As per an official statement from the manufacturer, the unique motor type utilised on this vehicle limits the issue to theNissan Ariya only.
A total of 9,813 Nissan Ariya models manufactured between the aforementioned dates have been recalled. As per the Japanese automaker’s estimates, 100% vehicles recalled are expected to contain the defect. “On affected Ariya vehicles, there is a potential that conductive fibrous shavings from the drive motors slip ring assembly can momentarily short circuit the two slip rings. If this occurs, the fibrous shavings are instantaneously burnt out resulting in no damage to any components,” said Nissan in a press release.

“However, due to the fail-safe protocols when the inverter detects a momentary over-current due to the short circuit, it cuts the motor torque to protect internal components of the controller, resulting in a loss of drive and ‘EV System Off’ message displayed on the dashboard to alert the driver,” it added. If the issue occurs, the torque to the driven wheels will be cut off until the fail-safe mode is released, following a vehicle power off and restart. Nissan warns that an unexpected loss of power while driving at high speed increases the risk of a crash.
Owners of all potentially affected vehicles will be notified to bring their affected cars to a Nissan dealer for repair from October 20, 2023 onwards. The company says that its dealers will be instructed to reprogram the inverter to improve fail-safe protocols. Do note that all repairs will be performed by Nissan free of charge.
