Emily Ratajkowski Takes an Unexpected Approach to Sweater Weather

O, the humble sweater. It’s fast becoming a versatile accessory in our fall wardrobes—whether you wear it over-the-shoulder or cross-body—rather than an actual top. Nobody know this better, apparently, than Emily Ratajkowski, who took the concept of sleeves-as-adornment to a new level.

The model was spotted in New York in a gray knit sweater dress. EmRata’s dress was strapless, its ribbed, would-be arms tied her chest. The simple dress also featured a flounce skirt, adding some movement while she walked. (For those fans of the hit 2006 teen mermaid films, my colleague Sarah Spellings referred to this subversion as “the winter version of the Aquamarine shirt dress.”) Ratajkowski’s tan suede pointy-toed stiletto boots reached the top of her calves, while the dress grazed the bottom of her thighs, leaving her knees exposed. She kept the accessories to a minimum, wearing small, chunky gold hoop earrings, holding a pair of dark sunglasses, and carrying a black crossbody bag.

This isn’t the first time the model and author has worn this look. In September, she attended the US Open men’s finals alongside Justin Theroux and Ziwe while wearing the same dress. That time, however, she chose to accessorize with darker shades, wearing a pair of black, knee-high boots, black oval sunglasses, and a black shoulder bag.

As we continue to explore the apparently infinite ways we can tie a sweater, Emily Ratajkowski has given us yet another option. So, next time you’re feeling stumped while getting dressed, consider DIY-ing this look, and stretching out the neck of your sweater and turning it into a tube top. You never know—it could work!
