Head, shoulders, knees and teeth
“My daughter, who’s 14, and I often discuss the issue of leg washing in the shower. Namely, if people are having a quick one, do they bother to wash their legs? I always do, soaping everything including my feet, but she doesn’t. Having asked around our friends, it seems that actively washing your legs and feet in the shower – as opposed to just letting the water stream down – is unusual!” Alex, 46, London
“For some reason, I always touch my toes 10 times in the shower. When I was pretty young I heard on the radio that the key to staying flexible is touching your toes 10 times a day, and the shower seems a good place to do it. I’ve done it ever since!” Leslie, 48, Kent
“I work long hours and need to make the most of the time that I get in bed, so for that reason I look for time-saving opportunities in the morning, and brushing my teeth in the shower is one of them. I thought it was an obvious thing to do, but my girlfriend thinks it’s absolutely disgusting and hates the thought of my spit in the shower, so I have to promise not to do it when I stay at her house.” David, 29, Birmingham
“I am a complete shower nut nowadays. It’s a luxury, and my new favourite purchase is a South Korean scalp brush to massage my head. I think it’s a reaction to having been a single mum for over 13 years, and always having had kids walking in on me. I used to be the master of the 30-second power shower. Now I like to completely indulge when showering. I wash my legs, feet, toes, eyebrows. Basically as many bits as possible – and with gadgetry!” Kim, 50, Cambridge
“When you have a large amount of chest hair – like me – it’s good to squeeze all the soap on to it and use it as a kind of reservoir. So I take a little, scrub some bits, and then come back for more. A mate of mine did the same but then had to shave his chest for an acting gig, and we’d often laugh in the pub about how he mourned the loss of his ‘reservoir’!” Oli, 42, London
Healing powers
“The shower is a completely safe space for me, and I always have one when I feel anxious. You’ll find me in there in the middle of the night when I can’t sleep, soothing my intrusive thoughts. When I suffered a painful miscarriage, I sat under a stream of warm water for hours, quietly grieving. And when too many espresso martinis gave me crippling hangxiety on a girls’ holiday, I headed straight to my en-suite and stayed there for two days.” Samantha, 45, Bournemouth
“Introducing a small four-minute egg timer to the shower is one of the best things I’ve ever done. It ensures my teenage daughter doesn’t spend ages in there. My five-year-old son sees it as a ‘fun’ challenge to get washed before the time runs out, and we’re saving money as we’re all more mindful of keeping to the time limit.” Jackie, 52, Surrey
“On a Friday or Saturday night, generally before heading out, I love treating myself to a ‘beer shower’. It’s exactly as it sounds – I drink a beer in the shower, usually a strong Belgian one, and I can’t express how amazing it is!” Mick, 42, Bedfordshire
Some like it hot
“As a business owner with a lot on my mind, I like my shower hot. I wait for the glass to steam up and then plan my day, and what needs to be done, by writing my ‘to-do’ list on the glass. I then take a ‘memory photo’ in my head and refer to it throughout the day.” Paul, 37, Essex
“I swear by a freezing cold shower every morning – Wim Hof style! It’s brilliant for both my mental and physical health, and I leave the shower feeling refreshed, clear headed and full of energy for the day. Cold water gives you a massive hit of dopamine so I’ve even started turning my boiler completely off so the water isn’t even lukewarm. The only problem is when I forget to switch it back on and my 11-year-old runs himself a freezing cold bath!” Hannah, 44, London
Singing in the rain
“I love beatboxing and the best place for me to practise has always been the shower. The steam warms up my vocal chords and the acoustics are great because of the tiles. I’m not entirely sure of the science – maybe the water vibrations have something to do with it too – but I always sing and beatbox in the shower, and encourage my music students to do the same.” Ben, 52, Cornwall
“My two small children, three and five, wash together so shower time is always full of laughter and singing. Their favourite game, which I cleverly introduced, is cleaning the shower. They especially love using the window squeegee when they’re finished. Clean kids and a clean shower: win-win!’ Mart, 38, London
Use your imagination
“We recently bought and renovated the house of our dreams, and the shower is our favourite part. I commissioned an artist to paint cartoon pictures of me and my wife naked – cavorting in humourous seaside scenes – which we had printed on the tiles, and the time I spend in the shower brings a smile to my face every morning.” Tim, 39, Hove
“I don’t tend to stand in the shower. Instead, I prefer to sit down on the floor, with some nice relaxing music playing, shut my eyes, and imagine I’m sitting under a tropical waterfall.” Caits, 37, Essex
