Kmart accused of charging more for size 10-18 clothes – here’s the truth

Kmart has been accused of charging more for Size 10 to 18 clothing in a new viral video – however it appears not all is as it seems.

Sharing on social media, one shopper – who uses the handle @MontanaVincent – posted footage that showed how pairs of the retail giant’s Pocket Shorts in sizes 6 and 8 were priced at $15. Price tags on the same shorts in sizes 10 to 18, meanwhile, were priced at $17.

“Since when did Kmart change pricing on size 10 and above?” she asked.

The shopper’s video has since gone viral with more than 400,000 views, sparking widespread debate among social media users.

However 7NEWS.com.au can confirm that Kmart is not charging more for different sized clothing.

It’s understood that a last-minute price drop on the popular shorts meant that some sizes were priced incorrectly.

While the shorts were originally ticketed at $17, Kmart decided to reduce the price to $15. However the late change meant some stores have selected stock at the higher price.

7NEWS.com.au understands that the shorts – even if they’re ticketed as $17 – will scan as $15 at the register.

The shorts are also priced at $15 on the Kmart website.

Despite the misunderstanding, it seems some Kmart shoppers believe it’s fair to charge more size 10-18 clothes.

Speaking out on social media, many said that it was reasonable to pay less for smaller clothes.

“So if I buy a king sized bed should it cost the same as a single?” one asked.

Another wrote: “I’ve always wondered why this isn’t the case ? Why should someone who is in a tiny size pay the same as someone who uses five times the fabric?”

A third said: “Makes complete sense, bigger = more fabric.”

One more added: “If you go to Macca’s and order a large milkshake do you expect to pay the same price as a medium?”
