Thomas & Friends toy by Mattel’s Fisher-Price recalled over fears of suffocation or death

A Thomas & Friends toy by Mattel’s Fisher-Price has been urgently recalled over fears a detachable piece could cause a range of hazards.

The Wooden Railway Troublesome Truck & Crates and Wooden Railway Troublesome Truck & Paint toys have a detachable high-powered magnet which can cause serious internal injuries, choking or death.

“The small plastic piece containing a high-powered magnet that connects one train to another can detach from the trains or become loose,” the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) said.

“There is a risk of young children choking on the connector that contains a magnet if it detaches.

“There is also a risk of serious internal injuries or death if a child swallows more than one small, high-powered magnet, as they can stick together across the walls of the child’s intestine or other digestive tissue.”

The carts, one carrying silver paint tins with a yellow paint splatter, and the other carrying wooden crates, are designed for children aged two years and older.

However, the design breaches mandatory standards for children up to and including 36 months of age.

“The mandatory standard was created to reduce the chances of small parts releasing or coming off toys during play or after reasonable wear and tear, helping to prevent choking, suffocation, or death,” the ACCC said.

The toys were sold online, internationally and nationally at a range of retailers including Toyworld, Mr Toys Toyworld and Kidstuff between October 6, 2022, and September 6, 2023.

The affected toys will display the product codes HBJ89 or HBJ90.

Anyone with the affected products has been urged to stop using them immediately.

A full return is available to consumers by following the Mattel instructions here, or by returning the product to the place of purchase.
