After a three-day drama at OpenAI, which saw three CEOs in three days, there is some more bad news. The company fired its CEO Sam Altman but was later pressured to reinstate him at the helm. However, negotiations broke and soon after Satya Nadella, Microsoft’s chief executive officer announced Altman is joining the Windows maker to lead a new advanced AI research team.Now that Altman is gone, other employees are reportedly finding their way out of the company.
According to a report by The Information, OpenAI rivals like Cohere and Adept made efforts to recruit employees from the ChatGPT maker. Citing people with direct knowledge, the report also said that Google DeepMind received an uptick in new resumes from OpenAI workers.
Mass exodus from OpenAI
The publication previously reported that OpenAI investors are also expecting a mass exodus of talent at the company. Soon after Altman’s ouster, fellow co-founder and former company president Greg Brockman announced that “based on today’s news, I quit.” Three OpenAI leaders reportedly quit.
Reports also said that Altman was looking to start a new venture and many of those who resigned were reported to be willing to join Altman in his new venture. Multiple investors also threw their weight behind Altman’s reported new venture.
Altman, Brockman join Microsoft
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced via a post on X that both Altman and Brockman have joined the company to lead an AI research team.
“… we’re extremely excited to share the news that Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, together with colleagues, will be joining Microsoft to lead a new advanced AI research team. We look forward to moving quickly to provide them with the resources needed for their success,” he said in the post.
He also said that the partnership with OpenAI will continue as is.
“We remain committed to our partnership with OpenAI and have confidence in our product roadmap, our ability to continue to innovate with everything we announced at Microsoft Ignite, and in continuing to support our customers and partners. We look forward to getting to know Emmett Shear and OAI’s new leadership team and working with them,” Nadella added.
