Nutritionist warns against eating certain fruit for breakfast

Many of us are in a rush in the morning, whether to get to work, to get the kids to school or to run errands.

And on those days it can be tempting to grab breakfast to eat on the go.

Bananas are a popular choice for this type of snack, due to the fact they are pre-packaged as well as their nutritional value.

It also means we are one step closer to getting our five-a-day first thing in the morning.

But according to one doctor, a banana may not actually be the best option.

While bananas are filled with potassium and vitamin B6, and free of cholesterol and sodium, they won’t keep our energy levels sustained throughout the day.

Speaking to Byrdie, nutritional expert Dr Daryl Gioffre explained: “Bananas seem like the perfect option to grab and go in the morning, but with a closer look, you’ll find that bananas eaten alone aren’t the best option because they’re 25 percent sugar and moderately acidic.

“They’ll give you a quick boost, but you’ll soon be tired and feeling hungry.”

Fruit and vegetables are undeniably an important part of a healthy, balanced diet.

So Dr Gioffre isn’t saying we should never eat bananas.

However, we should make sure it is paired with something else to avoid that potential crash in energy.

He said: “Without balancing this banana breakfast with a healthy fat, many of banana’s benefits are lost, while spikes in blood sugar and acid are gained.”

To avoid this issue Dr Gioffre recommended eating bananas alongside something that will neutralise the acid, and slow down the metabolism of sugar.

This should prevent the blood sugar spike, and subsequent crash, according to Dr Gioffre.

He advised pairing it with healthy fats or with spices for this reason.

Examples of healthy fats include nuts, seeds, avocados, olives and eggs.

He explained: “Because bananas are acidic, you’ll have to neutralise the acid to get the benefits of potassium, fibre, and magnesium without the sugar rush”.
