Police officer who tasered Clare Nowland, 95, in Cooma nursing home charged with manslaughter

A NSW Police officer who tasered a 95-year-old woman as she held a knife in a NSW nursing home has now been charged with manslaughter.

Clare Nowland died after she was stunned by Senior Constable Kristian White in the Cooma aged care home on May 17.

It is alleged White fired his stun gun at Nowland as she was holding a steak knife, while also using a walking frame, at the nursing home.

The grandmother fell and hit her head, fracturing her skull, and died at Cooma Base Hospital a week later.

NSW Police initially described the incident as “an interaction” between police and the woman.

White was initially charged with recklessly causing grievous bodily harm, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and common assault.

The additional charge against the 33-year-old officer was laid on Wednesday, and he remains suspended from duty with pay.

He will next appear at Cooma Local Court on December 6.
