The Cowboys losing to the Dolphins alone DOES NOT give Philly breathing room. If the Cowboys win out and the Eagles drop one game (regardless of which one), Dallas will clinch the NFC East based on either the division or conference record tiebreaker. The Cowboys losing to the Dolphins DOES set up what I’ll refer to as a win-win scenario for the Eagles in Week 17. With Dallas hosting the Detroit Lions, the Eagles are going to get a favorable result with one of those two teams losing.

Christmas came early for Lions fans, as Detroit clinched their first division title 1993. They are now in the second spot, thanks to the Cowboys’ loss to the Dolphins. Dallas slides out of the division lead, and into a Wild Card spot, with their loss to Miami. Cowboys fans will have their eyes on the Eagles’ game, as Philadelphia could inch closer to the division title with a win over New York.

1. Brian Johnson has become an easy target the last few weeks because the offense has been terrible, and while there’s no question he shares a chunk of the blame, it’s not all on him, and sometimes what appears to be a bad play call in reality is a bad decision or poor execution. Keep this in mind when we’re talking about Jalen Hurts’ ill-fated deep throws, which have become a real problem lately: Most play calls include a deep shot, a medium-range throw and a safe underneath throw, and the quarterback is going to look deep first, then mid-range and if there’s still nothing there he’ll dump it off. Not every call has those options built in, but in this offense most do. So where the ball goes is often up to the quarterback within the options of the play call. So it’s not like Hurts has to throw deep when he throws deep. And when Hurts gets picked off trying to connect with Quez Watkins instead of just making a safe throw to continue a drive that started out with three methodical plays for 30 yards or when he gets picked off in the final seconds forcing a deep shot to A.J. Brown when Kenny Gainwell is open underneath for a potential gain to get into Jake Elliott range, these aren’t necessarily bad play calls. They’re quite likely bad decisions by Hurts. “All of these plays really have multiple options,” Johnson said Thursday. “And the ball can go to a bunch of different places based on how the defense is presented.” He also started to question Hurts’ decision making on the second INT before stopping: “With two timeouts there you’ve got to just – we’ve got to put ourselves in a position.” The most concerning thing about Hurts’ play Monday night was his decision making, and honestly poor decisions have been behind as many of his 12 interceptions as poor throws. Hurts is naturally aggressive and it’s one of the things that makes him such a dangerous player. But he’s got to be smarter when it comes to understanding the situation and what is best for the team at that point in the game. Sometimes a boring eight-yard gain is the perfect play.

The Eagles offense ran for 178 yards last week. They need to do that again this week. The Giants are 29th in the league in run defense. This is a group you can run on. The Eagles will have a shuffled OL. Cam Jurgens will be back at RG, but Landon Dickerson is out this week. Sua Opeta will shift over to LG. That line should still be able to open holes for D’Andre Swift and other Eagles runners. Boston Scott is ready for his annual big game against the Giants. Jalen Hurts needs a bounce-back game. The biggest thing for him will be protecting the ball. If he can avoid turnovers, the Eagles should be able to move the ball and score points. They do have 13 INTs this year so the DBs can make plays on the ball.

The Cowboys are 3-5 on the road this season, where they average 21.5 points per game, and 7-0 at home, where they are averaging nearly 40 points per game. Against the Dolphins, penalties were again a problem — the Cowboys were penalized six times, including a face-mask penalty that kickstarted the Dolphins’ game-winning drive — and the defense could not get a stop to preserve the win. The Cowboys host the Lions next week to finish the most grueling stretch of their schedule, and their offense could use a get-right performance as they gear up for the postseason.

Schatz: Don’t get fooled by Tommy DeVito’s comeback against the Packers a couple weeks ago. The Giants are one of the weakest offenses in the NFL this year — 31st in DVOA. Yes, the Eagles are only 23rd, but that pass rush is getting after DeVito. The Eagles and Giants are also two of the slower-paced offenses in the league, which means fewer points. I’ll take UNDER 43.5.

1. It’s all about the turnover ratio. The Eagles were among the league leaders in turnover ratio last season and now, well, It has been a struggle all season. Philadelphia is at -6, and that is just not what Head Coach Nick Sirianni preaches, nor what his team has practiced in 2021 and 2022. What makes the statistic even more important in this game is that the Giants, even with all the challenges they’ve had throughout the season, are in plus territory in the turnover department. We can talk about a whole slew of statistics for this game, but the turnovers are always the ones that mean so very much. Keep an eye on it once again.

10. SOMEWHAT MEANINGLESS GAME. It would have been nice to beat the Dolphins, but it’s not the end of the world. The Cowboys still need the Philadelphia Eagles to lose another game to have a shot at the division, and if they do, Dallas still has a chance to take down the NFC East. They will have to win their last two remaining games to do it, but it’s still possible. In that regard, this game wasn’t completely meaningless, but it’s not as damaging as one might think.

Injury news: T Evan Neal placed on IR, Matt Peart activated – Big Blue View
The Giants activated former third-round pick Matt Peart off of the injured reserve as a corresponding roster move. Peart was drafted in the 2020 NFL draft and it was hoped that he and Andrew Thomas would become long-term bookends. He’ll likely be Tyre Phillips’ backup at right tackle for the remainder of the season.

The Washington Commanders’ comeback falls short, losing to the New York Jets 30-28 – Hogs Haven
The Washington Commanders were down 27-7 going into the 2nd half. The team was sloppy, and mistake-prone for two quarters, and needed a major change to attempt a comeback. Sam Howell was replaced by Jacoby Brissett after another interception was thrown. Brissett lead the team on three straight touchdown drives, and Washington had the lead for the first time. The Commanders were not able to get a first down on their next possession. They punted and the Jets were able to get the ball to Washington’s 36 yard line. Greg Zuerein kicked the 54-yard field goal to give the Jets the win. The Washington Commanders are now 4-11 for the season, and are still on track to have a top 4 pick in next year’s draft.
