Nintendo’s next Switch console is coming later this year, claims report |

Nintendo fans have eagerly awaited the release of the next-generation Switch handheld gaming console, and their wait might finally be over this year. According to Bloomberg, citing Omdia, the new console will launch later this year and feature an 8-inch LCD screen. Hiroshi Hayase, a display specialist at Omdia, has made this prediction based on sources from within the supply chain.
According to the report, the next-generation Nintendo Switch will feature a Sharp-made LCD pane, which would be larger than the current model. The LCD panel might seem a step backward from the Switch OLED, but the larger screen would come with a higher resolution and is expected to enhance the gaming experience for handheld gamers.
This prediction is based on Hayese’s research on small and medium displays. The analyst is anticipating that the launch of the new Switch console will lead to a significant increase in shipments for this class of displays.
Sharp announced in late 2023 that it would supply LCD panels to an unnamed upcoming console currently in research and development. Bloomberg reports that Sharp previously worked as an assembler for Nintendo during the COVID-19 pandemic.
There have been rumours that Nintendo showcased prototypes of the Switch 2 to selected game developers as early as last September. Developers who have claimed to have access to hardware say that the console is expected to launch in the second half of 2024. The console is likely to be portable like the Switch, and they have also claimed that the console would have an LCD screen to reduce costs. Nintendo aims to keep costs down to provide more storage in the device.
The console will retain the slot for cartridges to hold physical copies of games. There is no word if the upcoming Switch will be backward compatible or not, but Nintendo has suggested that it is likely to make it backward compatible to make it easier for users of current-gen consoles to transition to the newer one.
The Nintendo Switch has been a hit among gamers, selling over 132 million units in the last seven years. Despite recent hit titles, sales have gone down this year, thus Nintendo is looking to release an updated model in the second half of 2024.
