Witnesses said the man, believed to be aged in his 60s, lost control of his glider after hitting some rough air and landed hard against the side of the mountain.

Manilla SkySailors Club president Godfrey Wenness said it was a traumatic time.

“Our thoughts go out to his family and flying group,” he said.

Officers from the Oxley Police District cordoned off the area as investigations continue.

Authorities are treating the situation as an “accident”.

“The man’s parachute and equipment have been seized for examination,” police said.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
