Great Western Highway reopens at Katoomba after car and truck crash

A highway in the Blue Mountains was closed in both directions after a truck and car collided.

A mother in her 30s and her young daughter were inside the car and suffered burns in the crash, which occurred on the Great Western Hwy at Katoomba, near Explorers Rd at 6.37am on Monday.

The truck and Hyundai collided head-on, sending the Hyundai careering into bushland, where it burst into flames.

The child was flown to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. Her mother was taken to Westmead Hospital.

The driver of the truck was taken to Katoomba Hospital for mandatory testing.

Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry said the vehicle was on fire when crews arrived.

“Passers-by pulled both of the occupants, a lady and a child, out of the vehicle,” he said.

“Firefighters commenced emergency medical treatment on the child, who was suffering some pretty serious burns.”

A woman who stopped to help sustained burns to her arms as she pulled the child from the car, 7NEWS understands.

“I was just driving. I didn’t see the accident. I just helped in the best way that I could,” she told 7NEWS.

Will Hiko was another passerby who sprung into action, with the help of his colleagues.

“We had to smash the windows and pull her (the mother) out,” he told 7NEWS, adding that the responding motorists were also able to locate a fire extinguisher amid their rescue efforts.

The highway was closed in both directions for several hours, however, has since reopened.

“Diversions have been lifted, and traffic conditions are returning to normal through the area,” Live Traffic NSW said.
