The driver of the Holden, a 27-year-old man, and his passenger, a 27-year-old woman, died at the scene, along with a 41-year-old man who was the Mazda driver.

The front seat passenger of the Mazda — a 34-year-old woman — was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Armidale Hospital in a critical condition.

The two-year-old child suffered minor injuries.

It’s believed the crash occurred when one of the cars veered onto the wrong side of the highway.

“The exact causes and dynamics in relation to the crash are still being worked out,” Commander Acting Superintendent Gregory Donaldson said on Sunday.

“One car somehow crossed onto the incorrect side of the road. Which car it was is still under investigation and we’ll have more details on that as the days go past.

“The effects of these traumatic incidents aren’t just contained within the car that the crashes are in.

“It’s a whole community. It’s a network of medical and law enforcement and life support people.”

A crime scene has been established and an investigation commenced.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.

Anyone with information or dashcam footage about this incident is urged to contact New England Police District or Crime Stoppers.
