Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated India’s longest cable-stayed bridge Sudarshan Setu in Gujarat’s Dwarka. PM Modi laid the foundation stone of the 2.3 km-long bridge back in October 2017 and the bridge has been constructed at a cost of Rs 980 crores. The bridge will provide connectivity to Beyt Dwarka, before the construction, pilgrims had to rely on boat transport.Beyt Dwarka, located near the Okha port, lies approximately 30 km from Dwarka town.

The cable-stayed Sudarshan Setu bridge, spanning 2.32 kilometres, is the longest cable-stayed bridge in the country. It connects the Okha mainland to Beyt Dwarka island which is home to the renowned Dwarkadhish temple of Lord Krishna. The bridge boasts a unique design, featuring footpaths adorned with verses from the Bhagavad Gita and images of Lord Krishna on both sides.
The bridge also has solar panels on the upper portions of the footpaths will help generate one megawatt of electricity. The bridge features four lanes and 2.50-meter-wide footpaths on each side. Ahead of the inauguration, PM Modi called the bridge a “stunning project”.

Sudarshan Setu, totalling 2.32 kilometres and four lanes promises to revolutionise the travel between Okha mainland to Beyt Dwarka island, reducing the commute time to just a few minutes. The bridge will give motorists a chance to get better fuel-efficiency and due to smooth tarmac, the wear and tear will be lower on the vehicle components, thereby enhancing the vehicle’s age. Also, reduced congestion resulting from the four-lane construction will translate into time and fuel savings. Drivers spending less time stuck in traffic will directly result in reduced vehicle emissions.

Anticipated to accommodate thousands of vehicles daily, the bridge will boast a high speed limit which will be announced soon. The bridge will also incorporate multiple cameras to ensure public safety and to identify motorists breaking the traffic rules. As India’s longest cable-stayed bridge, its inauguration marks a momentous stride in the nation’s infrastructure landscape enhancing connectivity and efficiency for commuters.
