John Waters’s First Movie in 20 Years Will Star Aubrey Plaza, and I, For One, Am Ready

There is arguably no better person than John Waters (in the weirdo-filmmaker community, at least), and the fact that it’s been 20 years since Waters’s last feature film, A Dirty Shame, is a fact that sits heavy on the heart of Criterion buffs everywhere. Thus, when I heard that Waters is set to begin production on a new movie starring none other than my longtime Parks and Recreation and White Lotus crush Aubrey Plaza, I was abuzz with joy.

Waters’s new film, titled Liarmouth: A Feel-Bad Romance, has been referred to as a “hilariously filthy tale of sex, crime, and family dysfunction.” It allegedly revolves around a scammer and compulsive liar (named—what else?—Marsha Sprinkle) who steals from her family and generally runs amok after a breakup. Crush aside, ever since Plaza absolutely slayed her role as a mentally ill wannabe-LA-influencer-girlie in the 2017 film Ingrid Goes West, it’s been obvious that she possesses some serious, borderline-scary acting talent, and I can’t think of a better director to make the most of said talent than Waters. Even in sitcoms and comedies like The To-Do List, Plaza simply pulls off “weird young woman” like nobody else. (Besides, all you have to say to me are the words “illegal trampoline park,” and I’m in.)
